Vernou sur Brenne

Located at the confluence of the Loire, Cisse and Brenne Valleys, Vernou made its first recorded appearance in the 5th century, in Gregory of Tours’ History of the Franks, under the name “Vernaus vicus”. Closely linked to the history of the archbishops of Tours from the 11th century onwards, the village became a barony and was also known as Vernou l’Archevêque. The tranquillity and authenticity of the Cousse and Vaugondy Valleys characterise the village’s natural appeal. Château de Jallanges, once a fief of Château d’Amboise, is well worth a visit, with its harmonious stone and brick architecture and French-style gardens. In the midst of the village stands the Romanesque Church of the Holy Trinity, built in the 6th century under Saint Perpet, Bishop of Tours, rebuilt in the 11th century, and restored in the 11th and 15th centuries. There are also a number of other fine properties to discover, such as the Clos de Pouvray and Bas-Cousse manors, Château des Madères, the Hôtel Noble near the village, and several mills – des Landes, Garnier, Griard, de Villemereau, du Haut-Cousse and d’Angibault.
